That time the Wealthy Barber called me.

Reader,

A little Wealthy Barber story I don’t think I’ve ever shared…
(ok fine, I shared it on IG 🤣, if you’re not following me over there yet, you should be)

Back when I was teaching high school personal finance, one of my students had a bold idea:

“What if we just ask The Wealthy Barber to come speak to our class?”

So he emailed him.

Not expecting anything.

Within minutes, The Wealthy Barber emailed back and asked for my student’s phone number.

My student panicked (fair 😂), so we gave him mine instead.

One minute later… my phone rings.

“Dave here.”
“Angie here.”

And just like that, I was chatting with The Wealthy Barber.

He explained that while he loved the idea, he had a list of 300+ schools wanting him to visit, so one classroom wasn’t logistically possible.

Totally fair.

We chatted a bit more, and realized we went to the same university (same program, he graduated long before me… obviously 😏).

(It was Laurier, Honours Business, if you were wondering.)

That call kicked off something bigger.

From that point on, The Wealthy Barber became my textbook for my personal finance classes.

Why?

It was practical. Logical. No jargon. No guilt.

Just real-life money advice that actually made sense to teenagers and adults.

Fast forward, there’s a new, revised version of The Wealthy Barber, and honestly?

It still holds up.

Which is why I’m bringing it back in my Financially LIT Book Club.

Reader, I learned something this week that made me immediately log into my CRA account. Apparently Canadians are currently sitting on more than $2 BILLION in uncashed federal cheques. Yes… billion. With a B. But make it TWO!!!! Nearly 4 million cheques from the federal government have never been cashed (worth about $2.16 billion). And some of the biggest buckets of that money are: • $391 million in tax refunds• $387 million in GST returns for small-business owners• $141 million in Canada...

Reader, I'm angry today. This week our mortgage renewal paperwork showed up for our investment property. This is after two months of trying to get ahold of our advisor at Scotiabank… who apparently retired, but whose email and phone system are still very much alive and accepting messages. None of which have been returned. 🤦♀️ And honestly, the way this whole thing has been handled proves a point I've been yelling about for 20 years: The bank is NOT your friend. If you want all the details of...

Yesterday my daughter turned 15. HOW IS SHE 15?????? And I was a mess. How does that even happen? (I swear she was just starting kindergarten.) Here’s something not a lot of people know. One of the reasons I left teaching (yes, even with the summers off), was the lack of flexibility during the year. If she had an appointment?Hubby had to cover it. Or I burned a sick day. If something important happened during the day?I missed it. If she needed me?She had to wait until after hours. I didn’t...
